DIY Appliance Repair Tips

Wait! Before you call an appliance repair for assistance, you might be able to keep your appliances running correctly with the troubleshooting tips in this post.

1. Smelly Washing Machine

The presence of a unpleasant smell in a washer defeats the purpose of the appliance! If you’re in the process of attempting to get your clothing items so they are clean and fresh, but the washing machine will not cooperate, run an empty cycle in hot water with 2 cups of white vinegar and a half-cup of baking soda to remove the unpleasant smell. This issue commonly happens in front-loading washing machines. To prevent future smells, prop the door open following washes to let it dry out.

2. Inefficient Refrigerant

A semi-cool refrigerator in the kitchen is not a welcome sign. A warm refrigerator will not keep liquids cold, and the food on the inside could also be close to rotting! In most cases, your refrigerator won’t require professional repair; the inside might just need to be cleaned out. Or the coils on the back of the appliance are in need of cleaning.

Unplug the appliance and pull it away from the wall prior to cleaning the refrigerator coils. If you cannot see instant cooling improvement, it is best to contact a professional appliance repair technician in CITY for a diagnosis.

3. Clicking Igniter on Stove

If the igniter on your gas oven clicks nonstop and the burner won’t light, look to make sure the burner cap is in place and properly aligned. You might also experience this issue if you’ve had a recent boil over or liquid spill on your stove top.

Otherwise, the cause is most likely to be a clogged igniter. To clean the igniter, take off the burner top and clear away any loose particles. You can also use a pin to pick debris from the grooves. If that does not eliminate the issue, it is safest to not disassemble a lighter without training; in this case call on a professional appliance repair company to diagnose the problem.

4. Broken Garbage Disposal

A sink’s garbage disposal has self-protection in the form of an overload trip. If it is filled up, overheats, is left on for too long, or has another issue, your garbage disposal might simply need to be reset instead of replaced. Be sure the switch is turned OFF. Then, find the reset switch on the disposal beneath the kitchen sink and press the switch. If the button won’t stay in, just wait 10 minutes and attempt it again. Turn on the water and turn the button on.

If the garbage disposal in the kitchen sink is clogged with debris and you only hear a humming noise rather than food grinding, you could need to turn the blades using a hex key tool to clear the clog. Now, press the reset switch to get the garbage disposal working again. If these tips are unable to get the appliance working like it is supposed to, please don’t allow the urge to put one of your hands down into the blades to investigate. Be smart and arrange an appointment with a professional appliance service in CITY.

5. No Power from Outlet

In the bathroom or kitchen, the outlets need to be installed with GFCI switches to protect from harm in wet areas. If a GFCI electrical outlet isn’t generating power, push in the red button to see if it restores power.

If it doesn’t, or if you are trying on a standard electrical outlet, make certain that a breaker hasn’t tripped in the home’s breaker box. If you are not sure if a circuit breaker is tripped, flip it so it is in the OFF position and back onto the ON position. Just remember, safety near wiring is a must. If you have doubts, call a professional technician.

6. Wobbling Washing Machine

A wobbling washing machine will produce a startling banging and isn’t a good process to clean laundry. If your washer starts knocking, the washer might be in trouble. In order to repair this problem, rotate the legs on the appliance to lift or lower all corners until it is level. Another likely case is the appliance is not balanced. Crack open the top and arrange the clothes so they are more evenly dispersed in the drum of the washing machine.

Doing this should help the washing machine to not need to work quite as hard. If you try to arrange the laundry a couple of times without success, do not ignore the problem. You may have a loosened motor or drum mount to fix, which is easy for a professional technician to repair. But if you continue to operate your washer when it has this problem could destroy other parts and lead to a more significant repair in the future.
